Taking Action

Taking action
Tread Lightly also assists schools to “take action” or to extend student learning following a visit by the Tread Lightly Caravan or the Tread Lightly Drain Game.

Stormwater Sleuths
The Tread Lightly Charitable Trust is excited to announce our new citizen science project Stormwater Sleuths, proudly supported by Auckland Council, SouthSci Comet and Curious Minds.

Stormwater Sleuths is a comprehensive and facilitated educational programme, designed to enable students from 15 selected schools across Auckland to lead a citizen science project to understand the type and amount of gross pollutants and organic matter that enters the stormwater system through catchpits (stormwater drains) located in school grounds.

Student learning will be extended through the data analysis in the classroom to understand where the pollutants are coming from, the effect the pollutants have on our waterways and what can be done to address the issue. 10 schools will also have the opportunity for classes to participate in water monitoring field trips for students to further learn about the effects of water pollution in their local waterways.

Stormwater Sleuths is a year- long project to be delivered in the 2021 school year, suitable for a year 5-8 class, with the aim of answering the key question: “Is our school community contributing to stormwater pollution in our local catchment?”

Whānau “recycle right” workshops
With the support of Visy, Tread Lightly is offering a free Whānau "recycle right" workshop to schools in Auckland.

The workshops are designed to provide a "snapshot" for parents on how to recycle correctly and to dispel many of the common mistakes made when recycling at home.

The workshops are "hosted" by a class/syndicate as a way for students to 'take action", or organised as a whole school event. The workshops are normally held from 2.30 - 3pm to capture parents as they are waiting at school to pick their children up.

Through a collaboration with New Zealand Corrections Department, parents attending a workshop are also gifted a beautiful reusable bag made by people completing community service hours.

The recycling workshops are available for any school in Auckland to book in 2021. Please email [email protected] to enquire about a workshop.

Litter Blitz
The Litter Blitz initiative has become a great addition to the Tread Lightly programme as a way for students to “take action” and to show leadership in their community against litter and illegal dumping.

A Blitz involves a school shutting down for two hours to allow every student, teacher and as many parent and community volunteers as possible, to pick up litter from neighbouring streets. Tread Lightly undertakes all the organisation, supplies all the equipment and provides a celebration BBQ for students and volunteers.

The Blitzes are also proving very popular as a way companies can give back and get involved with their local community.

Tread Lightly has so far organised Litter Blitzes with nine schools across Auckland, hosting 4,578 students, teachers, parents and community volunteers, with 2,606 kg of litter and illegal dumping collected.

'Thanks for a great day yesterday for the Owairaka Litter Blitz - it went really well! Great organisation on your part. Thank you.'
- Owairaka District School - December 2019
